A number of module formats with features oriented towards a single family of processors have come out recently. The disadvantage of this type of concept is the dependence on the roadmap of a specific semi-conductor manufacturer. The eSOM-200 module format was developed so that long-term availability over 10+ years could be guaranteed. In particular very easy integration into the target environment was a major factor taken into consideration while shaping the technical specifications, so was platform independence. In addition to common computer interfaces, such as LAN, UART, USB and LCD, a simple, generic 16-bit bus is still available for an easy connection of typical peripheral modules. The eSOM-200 module measures a compact 80 x 50 mm. The module's 200 pins are accessible on two FX8C plug connectors.

The first representative of the eSOM-200 form factor is the eSOM/2586. It is based on the Vortex86DX SoC from DMP and is operated at 600, 800 or 1,000 MHz. This SoC brings together a CPU core, north and south bridge and a host of peripheral functions into a single IC housing. The eSOM/2586 memory consists of a 1 GB NAND Flash and 128 MB DDR2 SDRAM. An LCD controller with 64 MB video memory, a 4-wire touch screen interface, one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface, three UART interfaces, two 480 Mbps USB host 2.0 interfaces, an SPI interface, a CompactFlash slot and additional interfaces are available. The eSOM/2586 is already being supplied with Linux and X server and original Sun Java 6 Runtime (J2SE JRT) preinstalled in the NAND Flash.
